The demands of the HASS curriculum

With its extensive range of areas, the HASS strand can be difficult to fit into an already overloaded day. Including the Inquiry and skills and Knowledge and understanding of every HASS area can be a daunting task, but we’ve broken it down to make it easy to understand, with the sub-strands intrinsically linked with every content description taught.

The demands of the HASS curriculum

  1. When teaching each sub-strand of the Knowledge and understanding strand of the HASS curriculum, all sub-strands of the inquiry and skills need to be addressed.
  2. From each band (Foundation to Year 2, Years 3 & 4, Years 5 & 6), the Inquiry and skills sub-strands are developed.
  3. The content of the Knowledge and understanding strand (a vehicle for developing the inquiry and skills) may be different for each year but it builds on what has been taught before. Students can apply what they have learned in previous years to what they are studying now.

The History box provides everything the teacher needs to deliver History in such a way that the students will:

  1. play an active role in their learning rather than a passive one
  2. develop their skills of inquiry as they form and answer questions relating to the past
  3. re-live the experiences of people in the past through role-play and writing activities
  4. feel empathy and gain a deeper understanding of the lives of people of the past
  5. gain a better understanding of their country’s past and how people and events of the past have shaped the country as it is today
  6. enjoy learning and remember what they have learned so they can use their knowledge to better effect in subsequent year
